MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is an extension of SMS (Short Message Service) that allows you to send not just text, but also images, audio, video, and more. With MMS, you can enrich your communication by including various media types in a single message.
Why MMS Matters
MMS provides a more engaging and interactive way to communicate, making it suitable for businesses that want to share visual content, such as promotional images, product demonstrations, or even personalized greetings. However, it's essential to understand that MMS is significantly more expensive per message than SMS.
How MMS Works
On the Bigfoot Voice platform, MMS messages are delivered through our carrier partner, Flowroute. To send MMS, you'll need a 10DLC (10-digit long code) campaign, the same as for SMS. MMS messages are delivered as a single unit, unlike SMS, which may be segmented into multiple parts.
What to Expect
- Media Types: MMS supports various media types, including images (JPEG, PNG, GIF), audio (MP3, AMR), video (MP4, 3GP), and vCards/vCals.
- File Size: Each MMS can include a maximum attachment size of 1 MB. Files larger than this will fail to send. Some destination carriers accept up to 600 KB.
- Carrier Support: Not all carriers or devices support all media types. Older phones may not render video MMS, for example.
- Cost: MMS is more expensive per message than SMS.
- Group MMS: Behavior varies by carrier. Some carriers convert group MMS to individual messages.
- Landline MMS: MMS to landlines will fail silently or convert to a text-only fallback.
- International MMS: Support is limited and unreliable. Many international carriers do not accept MMS.
- Delivery Speed: Delivery speed is slower than SMS due to media download/upload at the carrier level.
- Read Receipts: There are no read receipts or reliable delivery confirmation for MMS.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- MMS not sending: Check the file size (must be under 1 MB), verify that your 10DLC campaign allows MMS, and confirm that the Flowroute API is passing the media URL correctly.
- Recipient not receiving media: The destination carrier may not support MMS, the recipient may be on a plan without MMS, or the media type may be unsupported on their device.
- Image quality is poor: Carriers compress MMS images in transit. The original quality cannot be guaranteed. We recommend sending smaller images.
- MMS to landline fails: Landlines do not support MMS.
